The Spread of the Italian Renaissance
（1450—1520 AD）

Alberti

Works：On Sculpture and Painting，On Painting，On Architecture，On the Family

001. Della famiglia / On the Family
This work in 4 books was written in the years between 1437 and 1441. The treatise is conceived as a conversation between Alberti and his brother Carlo at the death bed of their father Lorenzo，who died in 1421. Alberti describes family life as the embodiment of human happiness and sees the family as the basic unit of the wider society. Parents educate their children，and the ideals of this education should not be rigid discipline and blind obedience，but rather creativity，autonomy，and responsibility. A marriage is considered happy if the tasks of family life are divided naturally and reasonably between husband and wife. Orderly administration of material wealth is a service that leads to common welfare and satisfaction. Alberti takes these and similar observations from Xenophon’s Oikonomikos.
The third book bears the title “Il governo della famiglia”（The Administration of a Family），and the fourth book focuses on the value of friendship. Alberti’s considerations manifest several characteristic features of Renaissance thinking：the author shows his acquaintance with the works of non-Christian authors like Cicero，Seneca，Xenophon，or Quintilian. Alberti does not make use of allegories like medieval writers，but rather presents a conversation of real persons（family members）. He emphasizes that only an independent and mature mind can be a creative member of society，and thus the ideal of education should be a certain spiritual and intellectual autonomy. The treatise is one of the most refined examples of Italian prose of the Quattrocento （the 15th century）.

Vegio

Opera：De educatione liberorum
Works：The Education of Children

002. De educatione liberorum / The Education of Children
The full title of this work is De educatione liberorum et eorum claris moribus libri Ⅵ（The Education of Children and Their Good Habits）. Inspired by Cicero，Quintilian，and Augustine，many of the Renaissance scholars dealt with questions concerning education and refined manners，but Vegio’s six books on education are the only systematic and comprehensive work on this theme. As is typical for his period，the author combines pagan antiquity and Christian ideals and follows Augustine’s reflections on the elements of a good spiritual formation and education （see Augustine’s Confessions）.
The first book describes the problems of infancy and early childhood；naturally the main educators in this period are the parents，since children usually imitate the example of their parents. Vegio emphasizes the far-reaching influence of the mother.
The second book treats questions of school education. As the children grow older the parents should choose and employ capable teachers to educate their offspring. Vegio thinks that it is better if children are educated in a community of students，because in this way they also learn to show solidarity and fraternal help. However，the individual talents of each child should also be developed as far as this is possible. The teachers must be just，wise，and patient，when they educate the pupils. Many of Vegio’s timeless pedagogical observations and suggestions can still be helpful for teachers today.
The third book continues with the education of older children and youth. Young men and women need special guidance on their way to maturity，and an experienced teacher should pay attention to the special moral problems of their age. Similar to Erasmus，Vegio is also concerned about the education of girls.
The last three books of the work are addressing the children themselves. They should be aware of their duties toward their parents，their towards God and towards themselves. They should not only aspire the attainment of knowledge and understanding，but also the cultivation of moral attitudes and ideals. Their education should help them to become responsible citizens，loving parents and mature persons inspired by Christian ideals. Vegio emphasizes practical values，not bookish scholarship. He uses many quotations from the Bible and from classical authors to corroborate his views and also to show his erudition.

Valla

Opera：Adnotationes in Novum Testamentum，Confutatio in Morandum，De libero arbitrio，De professione religiosorum，De vero falsoque bono，Declamatio de falso credita et ementita Constantini donatione，Dialecticae disputationes，Elegantiarum linguae Latinae，Emendationes sex librorum Titi Livi，Historia Ferdinandi regis Aragoniae
Works：Annotations to the New Testament，Refutation of Morandus，On the Free Will，On the Vows of Monks and Nuns，On the True and False Good，Declamation Concerning the Forged Donation of Constantine，Dialectical Disputations，The Charms of the Latin Language，Corrections of Six Books of Titus Livius，History of Fernando，King of Aragon

003. Elegantiarum linguae Latinae / The Charms of the Latin Language
Written 1435—1444 and first printed in 1471，Valla’s anthology in 6 books was the first textbook of Latin since the textbook editions of late antiquity. It became very popular in grammar schools （“Latin schools”） all over Europe. By 1536 it had already appeared in 59 editions.
Valla praises the beauty and pervasive influence of the Latin language，which is the indispensable instrument for the dissemination of knowledge，science，wisdom，and religion. For Valla the Latin language was a “sacrament”（sacramentum），and even the “salvation of the world”（salus orbis terrarum），a view which might have been shared by many of the Renaissance scholars who were so enthusiastic about the greatness of Latin and the thought-provoking insights of philological studies. Once Latin united the Roman Empire，one of the greatest empires of history，and in terms of intellectual achievements，this empire was certainly unique in the history of mankind. However，due to the invasion of the tribes coming from the east and north of Europe the empire collapsed，and the Latin language suffered a period of barren weakness. Valla thinks the mandate and mission of his generation is to revive the lost beauty and vigour of the Latin language，and this must be effected by the study of the classical authors. Thus he introduces the works of Cicero，Vergil，Horace，Quintilian，but also the prose of Varro and Boethius. Valla analyzes the style of each author and so shows their individuality and creativity.
Valla’s work did not only earn the author praise，it also provoked fierce discussions and was attacked savagely by one of the most outstanding scholars of the day，Poggio Bracchiolini（1380—1459）. Poggio had discovered Quintilian’s work in the library of the monastery of St. Gall（Switzerland） in 1416. He accused Valla saying that he just used passages from classical authors in order to justify or propagate his own heretic and libertine views. According to Poggio Valla only distorted and defamed the great authors of antiquity. Of course these accusations lead to a vitriolic answer from Valla. The bitter quarrel between Valla and Poggio also sparked off the discussion whether Cicero’s Latin should be regarded as the one and only suitable model for Latin prose. This discussion was revived time and again. For example Erasmus contributed to it by the publication of his Ciceronianus in 1528，in which he took a moderate stance. Erasmus ridiculed the absurd formulations produced by some radical admirers of Cicero.

Institoris

Opera：Malleus maleficarum
Works：Hammer of Witches

004. Malleus maleficarum / Hammer of Witches
After the support for the persecution of witches given by Innocent VIII’s bull Summis desiderantes affectibus（1484），two German theologians，Institoris and Sprenger，published their work Malleus maleficarum in 1487. Between 1487 and 1669 there appeared 29 editions of the book，among them 11 French and 2 Italian versions. The work had a big influence，because it gave a theoretical foundation to the superstitious fear of witches. Before 1487 these vulgar and abstruse fantasies of the lower classes had basically been ignored by educated people，but Institoris’ work presented them in a scholarly and “scientific” way and thus brought them to the attention of popes，judges，and leading theologians（including Protestant theologians）.
The origins of the witch-craze were rumors about secret societies，infanticide，blasphemies，and nocturnal orgies at secret places. These same rumors had been the cause for the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire，and in the Middle Ages heretics like the Cathars，Albigenses，and Waldenses were charged with similar atrocities. As heretic sects continued to spread in the 13th and 14th centuries the fear of the devil grew into a superstitious terror of enormous impact. In the same period Spanish scientists and alchimists were much attracted by black magic and mixed “witch-ointments” and potions that caused halluzinations and intoxication. Witch-craft and heresy were thought to come from the same root：the connection with the devil. Thus the Malleus maleficarum argues that in any expression of witch-craft the devil cooperates and that women are much more prone to conclude a pact with the devil than men，because women are controlled by insatiable desire.
The Malleus maleficarum quotes many authorities（the Old Testament，Aristotle，Dionysius Areopagita，Augustine，Thomas Aquinas and others） to show that witches must be punished severely，usually by death penalty. The author of the Malleus employ an argumentative and apparently scientific language to enlist the numerous crimes of witches：they profane the sacraments，they bring bad weather，they harm the health of humans and animals，they ride on brooms and even have intercourse with evil spirits.
Seen from the juridical aspect，the Malleus maleficarum also induced big changes，because in the 3rd part of the work the authors openly support the inquisitorial denunciation method advocated （for example） by Nicolaus Eymericus’ Directorium Inquisitorum（1376）. As the normal accusation process was replaced by the denunciation method，the informant was kept secret and bore no responsibility. The accused person was kept in solitary confinement and hardly had a way to organize an effective defense advocate. In addition，the Malleus recommends the application of torture，a remnant of the Roman law which had regularly applied torture to slaves. The result was that in the 16th and 17th centuries innumerable innocent women （and men） were executed，since there was no effective way to escape denunciation. The property of the “witches” was confiscated and seized by the Church，by the court，and by the denunciants.
Some sober observers started to perceive the grave injustice that was done to the incriminated women. In 1631 the German Jesuit priest Friedrich Spee （1591—1635） anonymously published his Cautio criminalis，a sharp and courageous criticism of the injustice frequently done to innocent women. Spee was a pastor in Cologne and Paderborn，and he heard the confessions of many “witches” before their execution. However，only around the year 1700 the influence of the enlightenment movement led to a decisive move to abandon both witch-cases，and the use of torture at court.
